Take Part and Make a Difference

November, 2009

Dear Community Supporter,

In 2008 approximately 6,328 reports of suspected child abuse and neglect were made in Contra Costa County.  11,968 children were affected by those reports. In 85% of these cases, children are abused by someone they know or trust.  One in three girls and one in four boys will be sexually abused by the time they are 18 years of age.  This can change.

Child abuse is 100% preventable. It doesn’t have to happen.

Founded in 1984, the Child Abuse Prevention Council of Contra Costa has been a vital force in the Contra Costa County.  Our mission is clear: to promote the safety of children and prevent child abuse and neglect in our community by raising awareness, influencing public policy, educating and providing needed resources to families.  The services of the Child Abuse Prevention Council are provided free of charge to the communities of Contra Costa County.  Our services are available in both English and Spanish.

  • Community Education Programs (Trained 1,351mandated reporters in 53 training sessions)
  • Parent Education (This six month curriculum of positive parenting was provided to 60 parents)
  • Parent Outreach and Support Programs (Distributed parenting information and resource information to over 20,000 families and reached 7,000 people at 36 community events)
  • Newborn Connections Home Visitation Program (Visited 43 families with 127 children for in-home support, education and access to resources, for at-risk mothers)
  • Sue Fleischner Special Needs Fund (Assisted 87 families with 150 children during times of crisis)

Child abuse is everybody’s business!  And everyone can help.

As we prepare for the holiday season, I ask that you keep the prevention of child abuse in your holiday plans. For so many families, this can be a difficult time of year, where seasonal pressures can actually create the circumstances that surround abuse and neglect. You can choose to support the CAPC program that means the most to you.  You can direct your support to The Parent Education Program, the Newborn Connections Home Visiting Program, the Community Education Program or our Sue Fleischner Special Needs Fund.  Your friends and family can also be a part of this effort by joining you in support of one of these programs – programs that are not offered through any other organization in Contra Costa County. Please use the enclosed envelope for your tax deductible donation. Or visit our website at

www.capc-coco.org and make your donation on line.

Your support will make an immediate difference in the lives of at-risk families.

Thank you for your continued support. The dedicated Board of Directors, staff and volunteers of the Child Abuse Prevention Council know that our success depends on the support of our community.  Your donation will enable us to serve the most vulnerable children and families of Contra Costa County.

Wishing you peace this holiday season,

Carol Carrillo, MSW

Executive Director

A Child in Need is a Child At Risk

And You Can Help

Did you know that a stroller, especially a double stroller turns an immobile mother into a mobile mother?  With that stroller she can get to the grocery store, she can get to the bus stop, she can get to a doctor’s appointment.  She can be a better parent.  CAPC’s post partum home visiting program, Newborn Connections, provides in-home education and support for very low income mothers of infants. Through the home visiting process, CAPC is able to see the day to day needs of families; needs that can lead to circumstances that go hand in hand with abuse and neglect.  These are the items low income families often find it hard to provide.  Won’t you give us a hand and make a tax deductible donation of one of the following items.  You will be having an immediate and tangible effect on an at risk family.  We thank you for your donations.  For more information call 925-798-0546.

  • Grocery Store gift cards
  • Double strollers

Leave a Legacydad and daughter

"Leave a Legacy" is a campaign to help educate people from all walks of life about the possibility of making an estate gift to their charity of choice. Those of us who are able to give generously during our lifetime, and those who have been unable to make lifetime gifts, can discover ways to make major contributions through thoughtful, well planned wills and other gift techniques. Gifts may be in the form of money, property, investments or a portion of an estate. Gifts can be given simply as a thank you to a beloved organization or to ensure the continued vitality of the community for generations to come. Tax benefits may be derived from these gifts.

An attorney, accountant or financial adviser can help determine the type of gift that is right for each individual. The Child Abuse Prevention Council of Contra Costa County, Inc. is joining scores of other Northern California nonprofit organizations by taking the lead in promoting the Leave A Legacy educational campaign. For more information please contact Carol Carrillo at (925) 798-0546.
